Common questions about LingoBlend

A short orientation before the details. Here is how LingoBlend works, what it costs, and how the learning fits together — then the specific answers follow.

It starts with reading you can actually understand

LingoBlend is built around one idea: you learn a language fastest by reading things you mostly understand, with just enough unknown words to stretch you. That is comprehensible input — what Stephen Krashen called i+1. Blending is how we deliver it on demand. Take any text you already want to read, an article, a book chapter, or a URL, and mix your target language into it one word at a time, at a level you set.

The technique has a history. Robbins Burling described the diglot weave in 1968: weaving second-language words into first-language sentences so the surrounding meaning carries you through. A slider from 10 to 80 percent lets you start gentle and raise the challenge as words become familiar. Tap any blended word to see its translation, its base form, and the grammar behind the conjugation, then save it to your dictionary with one tap.

Free to use seriously, Pro to remove the ceilings

You do not need to pay to learn with LingoBlend. Basic Blend runs without limit, all five practice games and the full spaced-repetition engine are free, and beginner stories at A1 and A2 are open to everyone. The Pro plan exists for people who want the AI features every day rather than a few times a month.

When you subscribe, the monthly caps disappear: unlimited Smart Blends, the Word Story game, Immersive flashcard mode, verb conjugation tables, advanced word packs, and blending straight from a file or URL. Pricing stays simple, with one monthly and one yearly option, and both platforms share the same feature set, so nothing depends on the phone you carry.

One loop: encounter, save, review

Every part of the app feeds a single loop. You meet a word while reading a blend, tapping through a graded story, scanning a menu with the camera, or right-clicking it in your browser, and you save it. From there it enters an Anki-style review schedule and starts appearing in the games — flashcards, matching, listening, fill-in-the-blank, and word quiz — spaced so you revisit it right before you would forget.

LingoBlend supports 17 languages in any direction, so a Portuguese speaker can study Japanese as readily as an English speaker studies Spanish. Add an image or a personal memory hook to the words that trip you up, set a daily goal, and check the Word of the Day. The questions below cover the specifics; this is the shape of how it all fits together.

Frequently asked questions

Text blending is LingoBlend's unique approach to language learning. You paste any text — an article, a book chapter, or a URL — and our AI partially translates it into your target language. You control the percentage: at 20% you'll see a few translated words sprinkled in, at 80% most of the text is in your target language. It's like a difficulty dial for reading.

Yes! LingoBlend supports 17 languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Hungarian, Finnish, Indonesian, Turkish, Serbian, and Dutch. You can learn any language from any other — all 272 pair combinations work.

LingoBlend uses an Anki-style algorithm (SM-2) that schedules word reviews at increasing intervals based on how well you know each word. New words start with short intervals (10 minutes, 1 hour, 8 hours), then graduate to longer intervals (1, 3, 7, 14, 30, 60, 120 days). Combined with daily goals and streak tracking, this produces up to 25% higher retention than traditional study methods.

Each word in your dictionary has two memory boosters. First, tap "Add Image" to search millions of photos and pick one that captures the word's meaning — research on dual coding (Paivio, 1971) shows this makes recall 2-3× stronger. Second, add a Memory Trick — a personal note linking the word to something you already know (e.g. "pato" means duck and sounds like "pot," so picture a duck with a pot on its head). The keyword method (Atkinson & Raugh, 1975) shows this kind of personal association boosts recall by 1.5× compared to rote memorization. Once you've added images to at least 3 words, you unlock Immersive mode in Flashcards — you see only the image, then try to recall the word.

Yes! Free users can import up to 3 word lists per month from CSV files, plain text, or Anki-formatted exports. Pro users get unlimited imports. You can also use the Photo Import feature to scan foreign text with your camera, or browse pre-built word packs across 25 categories — beginner and intermediate packs are free, while advanced packs are Pro-only.

Word Story is a Pro-exclusive game that generates a personalized short story using your saved dictionary words, entirely in your target language. Choose Read mode for a paginated reader or Listen mode with high-quality audio narration and speed controls. After each story, answer 5 comprehension questions to test your understanding. Up to 20 stories per day.
