Reading on a phone and reading on paper are good at different halves of the same job, and for language learners the tradeoff is sharper than it is for native readers. A screen resolves unknown words instantly and lets you capture them for later review, which is what keeps a difficult text readable at all. Paper encourages longer, uninterrupted stretches and a better feel for where you are in a text. The comprehension research leans slightly toward paper, but not by enough to override the lookup problem.
What the screen-versus-paper research actually says#
The most-cited work here is a meta-analysis by Delgado and colleagues, published in Educational Research Review in 2018, which pooled dozens of studies comparing comprehension of the same texts on screen and in print. It found a small advantage for paper, with two moderators mattering more than the medium itself: the advantage grew when readers worked under a time limit, and it was larger for informational text than for narrative. A meta-analysis by Clinton (2019) in the Journal of Research in Reading reached a similar conclusion and added a metacognitive finding — readers tended to overestimate how well they had understood a text read on screen.
That overconfidence effect has a longer history. Ackerman and Goldsmith (2011) found that learners reading on screen predicted higher scores than they earned, and regulated their study time less carefully, than learners given the identical material on paper.
Why the effect is smaller than it sounds#
Three caveats keep this from being a verdict. First, the medium is confounded with the reading conditions: a "screen" in many of these studies meant a scrolling browser window on a device with notifications enabled, which is a different thing from a dedicated reader in airplane mode. Second, the effects are group averages, and individual differences in reading habits swamp them. Third, and most important here, the participants were overwhelmingly reading in their first language. Foreign-language reading has a bottleneck native reading does not — unknown vocabulary — and the medium that handles it best is not the one that wins a first-language comprehension test.
The friction problem that screens solve#
In a language you are still learning, comprehension rarely fails because the medium is glowing. It fails because of a word you do not know in the middle of the sentence that carries the paragraph. On paper your options are to guess, to skip, or to stop and open a dictionary. Guessing works when you already know most of the surrounding words; Paul Nation's coverage research suggests comfortable independent reading needs something like 98% known words, with around 95% workable when support is available. Below that band, unaided guessing degrades into decoding.
Stopping to look a word up costs far more than the seconds it takes: it breaks the sentence, drops the thread of the argument, and reliably ends the session earlier than planned. A phone collapses that cost to a tap. The medium question is therefore not symmetric for learners — the screen is a different reading experience with an instant gloss attached.
What paper is genuinely better at#
Paper's advantages are real. A printed page has a fixed spatial layout, which appears to help readers build a mental map of a text; Mangen and colleagues (2013) found that readers of a printed story reconstructed its chronology more accurately than readers of the same story on a tablet. Physical position in a book also gives continuous feedback about progress that a progress bar does not.
The larger benefit is negative space. One proposed explanation for the screen deficit, sometimes called the shallowing hypothesis, is that habitual scrolling through short, disposable content trains a shallow processing mode that carries over to any text on the same device. Whether or not that mechanism holds up, the practical point stands: your phone is also the place where every interruption in your life arrives.

Use each for what it is good at#
The useful framing is not phone or paper but which mode of reading you are doing. The distinction between intensive and extensive reading maps onto the two media almost exactly.
Intensive reading — a short, hard passage you mine for vocabulary and grammar — belongs on a screen, because you will be looking words up constantly and every lookup should end with the word saved. Extensive reading — a long, easy book you read for volume and pleasure, where you deliberately do not stop for unknown words — belongs on paper, or on a dedicated e-ink reader with the dictionary off. If a graded reader at your level is easy enough that you would only stop two or three times a chapter, print is the better container for it — and the friction of paper enforces the no-stopping rule for you.
Making phone reading behave more like paper#
Most of paper's attention advantage can be recovered with a few deliberate choices. Read inside a dedicated reader rather than a browser tab, so there is no feed one gesture away. Turn on a focus mode for the session. Use a paginated rather than scrolling layout, which restores some of the spatial structure that helps memory for a text. And read to a fixed length — a chapter, or fifteen minutes — rather than until you get bored, which is the point at which the phone usually wins.
The second half is capture. A lookup that is not saved is a lookup you will repeat. Capturing words when you read on paper#
Reading on paper does not have to mean losing the vocabulary. The cheapest method is a pencil and a margin dot: mark the word, keep reading, and enter the marked words in one batch at the end of the chapter. Batching protects the flow that made you choose paper in the first place.
If typing them in later feels like a chore you will skip, photograph the page and let OCR pull the words out — the approach described in scanning menus and signs with OCR works equally well on a book page. Either way, the words end up in the same queue as your screen reading. A learner using both media with one shared vocabulary list is better off than one who picked the theoretically superior medium and captured nothing.
