French takes roughly 600 to 750 hours of study to reach professional working proficiency, putting it in the Foreign Service Institute's easiest category alongside Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. The total is not the interesting part. French is unusual in how unevenly those hours distribute across skills: reading arrives early and cheaply, and listening comprehension stays stubbornly behind for months after you can read a newspaper.
Where the 600-hour figure comes from#
The Foreign Service Institute is the US State Department's language school, and it categorizes languages by how long its own students take to reach level 3 in speaking and reading on the Interagency Language Roundtable scale — "Professional Working Proficiency," which maps loosely to B2–C1 on the CEFR.

The figure needs its caveat attached every time it is quoted. FSI students are adults screened for language aptitude, studying full time — roughly 25 hours a week of small-group instruction with native-speaker teachers, plus several hours of daily homework — with their careers riding on the result. The published number is contact hours, not total effort. An unstructured hour on a commute is not equivalent to an hour of corrected classroom production. Treat 600–750 as an optimistic floor for a supported learner and expect independent study to run longer. The same qualification applies to the Spanish timeline, which sits in the same category.
The French difficulty profile: reading is fast, listening is slow#
Most languages advance roughly in step across skills. French does not, and understanding why saves months of misdirected effort.
Reading is unusually cheap for an English speaker. After the Norman Conquest, English absorbed French vocabulary on an enormous scale. In Finkenstaedt and Wolff's count in Ordered Profusion (1973), about 28% of English vocabulary is of direct French origin, with a similar share arriving from Latin — meaning more than half the English lexicon shares roots with French. The consequence on the page is immediate: gouvernement, nation, situation, possible, important, développement. Academic and journalistic French, which leans on exactly that Latinate register, is often the easiest French to read. Learners routinely find they can follow a Le Monde article months before they can follow a Le Monde podcast.
Listening is where the hours go. Written French and spoken French differ more than in most European languages, and four mechanisms do the damage.
Liaison and enchaînement fuse word boundaries: les amis is pronounced as one unit, and the listener has to segment a stream that the writing system had helpfully pre-segmented. Silent letters mean most written endings are not pronounced, so parle, parles and parlent sound identical while looking distinct. Nasal vowels and the /y/–/u/ contrast (as in tu versus tout) do not exist in English and are hard to hear before they are hard to say. And the spoken register diverges from the written: ne disappears in negation, on replaces nous, questions are formed by intonation rather than inversion, and colloquial vocabulary rarely appears in textbooks.

The practical implication: if you study French the way you would study Spanish and expect the skills to move together, you will conclude something is wrong with you around month four. Nothing is wrong. The listening lag is structural and it is normal.

The shape is the finding. An hour a day makes French a two-year project; fifteen minutes a day makes it a seven-year one, which exceeds the motivation most people can sustain. Daily volume, not method selection, is the variable that decides whether the project finishes.
Why the estimates vary so much#
"Learning French" is not one finish line, and that accounts for most of the spread between published answers. Exam boards put A2 at roughly 180–200 guided learning hours and C1 at 700–800 — a fourfold difference hiding inside the same phrase. Someone who means "order dinner in Lyon" and someone who means "chair a meeting in Brussels" are describing different projects. Three further factors move the number. Prior Romance languages compress the timeline substantially; a Spanish speaker learning French starts with the grammatical architecture already installed. The quality of the hours matters more than the count — active reading with retrieval beats passive listening by a wide margin at lower levels. And whether you train listening deliberately determines whether your skills stay balanced, because reading progress in French will otherwise outrun listening indefinitely.
What actually determines the timeline#
Two variables, and neither is which app you picked.
The first is daily consistency. Distributed practice retains better than massed practice, a result replicated across a century of research and summarized in the meta-analysis by Cepeda et al. (2006). Thirty minutes on six days beats three hours on Sunday.
The second is volume of comprehensible input — material you can mostly follow, in quantity. Krashen (1985) argued that acquisition comes from understanding messages slightly above your current level, and in French the reading advantage means that supply arrives sooner than in most languages.
